Safety Tips when on the water

Safety Tips when on the water

Tips for a fun and safe time on the water

We are mid-way through the summer months, and this is a great time for some basic reminders for enjoying the lakes, rivers, and local ponds. Whether one is kayaking/canoeing down a river, lake, or a smaller pond, there are several things which must be kept in mind.

  1. Know the air temperature for the day before setting out. On these summer days it can be quite hot and humid. In these conditions ensure that you are taking steps to properly hydrate before, and during, your excursion. Dehydration can occur quickly leading to diminished mental and physical functionality, and when on the water there is no place for  dulled mental or physical capabilities.
  2. Know the wildlife in the area. Be especially alert to wildlife which can be potentially dangerous. Alligators, bears, snakes, or possibly sharks just to name a few. The vast majority of the time these animals will not attack you, but attacks do occur, and knowing the wildlife you might encounter while on the water will help you better prepare for potential encounters.
  3. Avoid being on the water in extreme weather conditions. In parts of the country extreme weather can develop quickly, and should this occur you should exit the water as quickly as possible, find appropriate shelter if possible, and allow the severe weather to pass.
  4. Avoid being on the water after dark unless you are experienced in after dark experiences and are very familiar with the body of water you plan to explore. Once vision is limited, safety is most always compromised to some degree.
  5. Ensure that you have appropriate clothing for the outing. This tip cannot be overstated, and may well keep you from serious injury, or worse, should something go awry.
  6. Find a way to keep things dry; ID, personal property, keys, and such. We were recently on a local river, and the ReadyWise 2 Day Adventure Kit and Dry Bag at Joseph’s Harvest served us very well for both basic supplies and keeping our important items dry. The reusable dry bag was amazing at keeping everything dry during the outing.

These are but a few basic tips which should help you have an enjoyable, and safe, time when on the water this summer. For additional safety tips see these recommendations by the American Red Cross.
